Self Deception

“Heroes of the wine bottle!”

IMG_6967 by you.

“You are doomed! Heroes of the wine bottle!  Brave and fearless when it comes to mixing drinks!  But for just a bribe you let the guilty go free, and you keep the innocent from getting justice.” (Isaiah 5:22)

As I began to think about the closing of this year and all the parties that will ring in the new, I remembered this photo I took of some empty bottles with lights and decorations.  Funny isn’t it how it takes so little to change the focus or blur the view.  A slight tweak of the camera lens and decorated empty bottles become a beautiful kaliedescope of lights.

Alcohol and other drugs are not the only things that we can surrender ourselves to and subsequently find our “vision” blurred and our focus distorted.  Greed, lust, apathy, and hate (just to name a few) can have the same effect.  While living in the distorted reality of our “bottle” we try to fool ourselves into thinking that the hurt we cause ourselves and others (especially those we love the most) is really not the big deal that everyone tries to make it.

The prophet Isaiah encountered this same problem almost 3000 years ago. We may try to fool ourselves and others into believing our distorted reality is the truth, but in the end, the same is true now as then.  If we drink from our “bottle” of self-deception we are “doomed” to reap the awful consequences of our hurtful behaviors.

If we truly want a happy “New” year, then we best seek our truth from the only source we can trust – our God who creates, sustains, and renews us with divine love in Jesus Christ.  In this new year I pray that God will help me drink not from some “bottle” of self deception, but rather, from God’s cup of the new covenant in Christ, that I might walk in his ways of love, peace, and justice.  How about you?
